Class AA Girls
100 Meter Dash
Defending Champion Deja Jones of Oak Hill was gunned down for a False Start in the Finals
paving the way for Sherman's Demi Kirk to squeak out the title over Philip Barbour's
Marteney Jacobs and Oak Hill's Mercedes Lawson. Kirk's 12.64 time in the Trials
was good enough to be the 4th Best Class AA State Meet Performance this Decade.
RunWV's Current Score: 4 of 6.
200 Meter Dash
Oak Hill took the sweep with Shakilya Cosby and Mercedes Lawson going 1-2 in the 200.
Sherman's Demi Kirk also ran under 26.5 in taking 3rd. The front five all ran 26.62 or better.
RunWV's Current Score: 10 of 12.
400 Meter Dash
Oak Hill's Shakilya Cosby blew away the field for the 2nd year in a row as she won by nearly
3 seconds. Her time of 57.68 was the only one under 60 seconds, and was good enough to be the 4th
Best Class A-AA State Meet Performance and the 3rd Best Class AA State Meet Performance this
Decade.. Oak Glen's Hailee Temple and Sherman's Demi Kirk came through under 61.
RunWV's Current Score: 15 of 18.
800 Meter Run
Oak Glen's Hailee Temple pulled away to take the 2 second victory over the Shady Spring pair of
Chelsea Callaway and Kelsey Paine. Philip Barbour's Amber Adkins just nudged
past Wayne's Shannon Rutherford in the last step for 4th. Oak Hill's Neaire Miller
also came through under 2:30. One of my predicted placers did not run.
RunWV's Current Score: 19 of 24.
1600 Meter Run
Herbert Hoover's Erica Hayes led the field through in a quick 1:13. She was followed by Shady
Spring's Chelsea Callaway, Philip Barbour's Amber Adkins, and Frankfort's Rebekah
McBride. There was a large pack together at the end of two laps. Hayes was joined by Philip
Barbour's Sarah McCauley and Keyser's Hannah Biser at 2:40. Callaway, Adkins, and
McBride were joined by Oak Hill's Neaire Miller and Weir's Tricia Marker. After 3 laps,
McCauley, Adkins, and Callaway were together at 4:06. McBride had fallen back by 3 seconds. Hayes
and Marker were two seconds behind her. Adkins pulled away down the stretch to win by nearly a second
over Callaway. McCauley held onto 3rd as the front three came in under 5:25. Miller used a late push
to get by McBride for 4th. Marker moved back up to 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 24 of 30.
3200 Meter Run
Shady Spring's Chelsea Callaway and Philip Barbour's Amber Adkins and Sarah McCauley
led the field through the 1st lap in 1:20. The Frankfort pair of Rebekah McBride and Brittany
Armentrout were close behind in 1:21. After two laps, it was still Callway, Adkins, and McCauley
in front in 2:48, with McBride and Armentrout being joined by Weir's Tricia Marker and PikeView's
Chelsea East at 2:49 and 2:50. After 3 laps, not much had changed. There was still quite a
pack at the 1600 meter mark with Callway, Adkins, McCauley, McBride, and Marker all crossing in 5:51.
Armentrout was just 4 seconds back. The pace slowed dramatically on laps 5 and 6 with the leaders
only going 1:36 and 1:35, but some separation still managed to occur. After lap six, it remained
Callaway, Adkins, McCauley, and McBride, all through in 9:02. Marker had dropped off the pace and
was 6 seconds back, and Armentrout was an additional three seconds behind. No one else was threatening.
The pace picked back up a little on lap 7 with Callaway, McCauley, and McBride coming generating a two
second gap on Adkins. Armentrout had gotten around Marker. It became a kicker's race, and the front
three did not disappoint. Callaway closed in 77, McBride and McCauley close in 79, giving Callaway
the win by about a second and a half. McBride just outleaned McCauley to take 2nd by just 0.02.
Adkins held on for 4th. Marker got back around Armentrout to take 5th.
RunWV's Current Score: 29 of 36.
100 Meter High Hurdles
Philip Barbour's Marteney Jacobs was the only one in the field who made it in under 16 seconds
in the final. Only three girls ran under 17 seconds in a very down year for AA Girls High Hurdles.
RunWV's Current Score: 33 of 42.
300 Meter Low Hurdles
Philip Barbour's Marteney Jacobs ran away from the field, winning by over 1.4 seconds. Her
45.69 was the only time under 47 seconds. Roane's Ashli Knotts and Weir's Kandis Castelli
were under 47.5. Two of my predicted placers did not run.
RunWV's Current Score: 37 of 48.
4x100 Meter Relay
Oak Hill demolished the field, winning by over 2 seconds. The foursome of Joi Fruit, Mercedes
Lawson, Deja Jones, and Hayle Martin clocked a 50.31, which stands as the 2nd Best A-AA State
Meet Performance and the Best Class AA State Meet Performance this Decade. Roane scored
an easy 2nd place.
RunWV's Current Score: 40 of 54.
4x200 Meter Relay
Oak Hill pulled this one out, but it was much closer than the 4x100. Oak Hill relied on the anchor
leg of Shakilya Cosby to pass Roane as they were the only two teams under 1:50.
RunWV's Current Score: 45 of 60.
4x400 Meter Relay
Weir pulled away to win by over 1.6 seconds. 2nd through 5th were separated by only 0.51 seconds in
an exciting finish. Grafton held the 2nd spot. Oak Hill again relied on a great anchor leg by
Shakilya Cosby to move up from 7th or 8th all the way up to 3rd. Keyser edged Liberty Harrison
for 4th.
RunWV's Current Score: 51 of 66.
4x800 Meter Relay
Shady Spring took the lead early on a 2:24 opening leg from Kelsey Paine and led pretty much
throughout. Frankfort was within a second after two legs, and Weir was within 3 seconds after three
legs, but a 2:24 anchor leg from Chelsea Callaway closed the door. Weir edged out Frankfort
for 2nd place. Oak Glen used a 2:23 anchor leg from Hailee Temple to move up to 4th.
RunWV's Current Score: 57 of 72.
Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Oak Glen, Roane, and Weir were the only teams to go under 1:10 with Oak Glen being the only team to
go under 1:09.
RunWV's Current Score: 62 of 78
Long Jump
Philip Barbour's Marteney Jacobs soared 17'10, winning by a foot and a half. That leap was good
enough to give her the 3rd Best Class A-AA State Meet Performance and the 2nd Best Class
AA State Meet Performance this Decade. Oak Glen's Maranda Woodruff was the only other
jumper to go past 16'. One of my predicted placers did not jump.
RunWV's Current Score: 66 of 84.
High Jump
Sissonville's Sydney Cummings cleared 5'6 for the 4th year in a row. This year's 5'6 effort
in conjunction with her three prior 5'6 efforts at the State Meet gives her the 7th Best All-Time
State Meet Performance and the 2nd Best Class A-AA State Meet Performance and the 2nd
Best Class AA State Meet Performance this Decade. Only one other jumper was higher than 5'0,
and that was Roane's Morgan Cottrell who cleared 5'4. Berkeley Springs' Amber Booher
was the only other jumper to clear 5'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 71 of 90.
Shot Put
Berkeley Springs' Harlie Stotler edged out defending Champion Alea Hipes of Point Pleasant
by just 2.75 inches. Stotler's 37'5 toss gives her the 6th Best Class AA State Meet Performance
this Decade. Stotler and Hipes topped 37'. No one else was over 35'. Only Poca's Andrea
Celorio was over 33'. One of my predicted placers did not throw.
RunWV's Current Score: 75 of 96.
Discus
Oak Hill's Brittney Thomas defended her Discus title from a year ago. Her 121'2 throw was over
12' ahead of the competition and is the 10th Best Class A-AA State Meet Performance and the
4th Best Class AA State Meet Performance this Decade. After a season in which only two girls
had topped 100', five of them did it at the State Meet. Berkeley Springs' Harlie Stotler, Weir's
Alanna Pritts, Weir's Natalie Bohn and Ritchie's Jessica Haugh topped the mark
at the State Meet, with the first three of those going over 105'.
RunWV's Current Score: 80 of 102.
Pole Vault
Roane's Ashli Knotts cleared 10'0 to make her the highest female vaulter of the weekend. That
vault along with previous State Meet Vaults of 9'6, 9'0, and 9'0 gives her the 8th Best Class A-AA
State Meet Performance and the 6th Best Class AA State Meet Performance this Decade.
RunWV's Current Score: 85 of 108.
The final score of 85 of 108 means that 78.7% of the people picked to place did indeed place. Congratulations to those that proved me wrong.
